Zinnia Growing Guide

  • Germination/Seed sowing

    • Germination rate = 5 - 7 days
    • Sow seeds in cell trays 4 weeks before last spring frost OR direct sow in the ground after last spring frost
    • Bury seeds 1/4 inch deep with moist seed starting soil
    • Cover soil with a layer of vermiculite (optional)
    • Keep soil evenly moist until germination occurs. Bottom water cell trays or mist soil everyday (minimally) until seedlings emerge.

  • Planting

    • Harden off seedlings gradually by slowly exposing to outdoor conditions over the course of 5-7 days.
    • Transplant seedings once all danger of frost has passed.
    • Light = Full Sun.
    • Plant Spacing = 9-12"
    • Height = varies
    • Some tall varieties might benefit from support netting

  • Harvesting

    • Harvest blooms once the stem has become sturdy and the flower is partially open.
